'Meteorite' meteorites are the most common type of meteorite you will encounter. Another use for Meteorite chips is to create Meteor Shields which protect the surrounding area from natural meteorites.
The Meteor Blocks may also rarely contain Red Meteor Gems which are used to upgrade your Meteor Shield, as well as the ability to craft Meteor Summoners and Detectors. Note that the Meteor Block has to still be hot in order to have a chance of possibly finding a Red Meteor Gem.
Notes
Some meteorite ore can be found deep in the ground. This feature was added so it would be possible to obtain a meteorite shield faster and protect ones house.
